Droped packets can be measured in many ways. Or more presicely, droping packets with respect to what reference. This sort of thing can also be used to start the analysis of where packets are being droped in a given system, or subsystem.

The graph above is comparing 3 values. The number of packets that the switch is reporting going into the device (spur.ref, an SNMP value), the number of packets coming into the kernels driver layer (gathered from proc), and the number of packets snort reports via permonitor (snort.stats). Here we graph the differences bettween the SNMP reference and the proc/snort.stats values.
